Opening the book of Isaiah unveils a book written during one of the rockiest periods of the history of God’s people. Isaiah begins speaking just prior to Assyrians domination, follows through that time of Israel’s demise, and then finds its hope in distant and foggied promises of a God-sent rescuer. That Rescuer gives glimpses of never seen before qualities that reveal dominance through suffering. Could this mysterious rescue embody both a king and one who would graciously and sacrificially absorb the covenant curses that sin had brought and justice demanded? Could God’s plan be so mercy-heavy? Has he forgotten the mass rebellion of His people’s heart? Time would tell and Isaiah whispers hints to the outcome. Let’s enjoy reading this letter together.
