Wednesday's Moment: Rooster's and Denial

Today’s reading, Luke 22:54-71, carries alot of thought - its that famous passage where Peter denies the Lord. It has always amazed me that this was just hours after he had been so strong… so confident. It exemplifies the weakness of the human heart and the tendency to protect self above all else. Rather than look at Peter with disdain and critique, I see this as an opportunity for introspection of my own heart. How quickly does it take for me to fold, give in, or be drawn into sin and my own purposes?

Let us be harder on ourselves than we are on Peter. Its easy to find fault with his denial, but if we only see Peter’s weakness and fail to allow the Spirit of God to stir in us recollections of our own failures or sinful tendencies… then we walk away from this passage just as confident in self as Peter was as he left the upper room that night. Unfazed and having faith in self and our ability to hang on rather than full surrender and reliance on the One who helps us at our weakest and see’s everything - even before it happens. Lean into Him, trust Him, admit your weakness, find strength in Him and His cross.

Today I am asking you to join me LIVE at Noon for a time of prayer. We will be meeting virtually FACE to FACE. If you have a laptop you can just click the link below. If you are on a mobile device, download the ZOOM App and then click that same link. Let us come together and pray for God to work in special ways. See you there.

Monday Reflection with Pastor Tom

There is nothing better to talk about than the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What are your thoughts as you read Luke 24 yesterday and listened to the Sunday sermon. The passage is an amazing day and provides a rundown of events as they unfolded. What were your thoughts? What made an impact or caused a question to come up?

Pastor Tom is inviting you: Join him in his office over the internet for a good discussion about the message from our “Knowing Jesus” Sermon Series. Wednesday's Thought from Pastor Tom

We have never been through this before. The things going on all around us are new - odd - and unpredictable. As pastor of our church, I have been able to see highlights of God’s goodness and people’s faithfulness. I do believe God is at work.

I have also seen people struggling. Our older folks are on lock down, our families are quarantined, some are suffering from lay-offs, and a good group in our church are on the front lines serving the health needs of many. This calls for the church to be resilient and to look to the Lord for strength and for God to use this to grow us and His Kingdom.

Tuesday's Passion Week Reading

Luke 20: 20-47

Getting an early start this morning… This passage is is quick and to the point… Notice the highlights:

Confrontation #1- The Chief priests try to trap Jesus about by asking about paying taxes or honoring God - Jesus responds by telling them to do both - its not an either or. Reminds us of our own Corona virus situation doesn’t it.

Confrontation #2 - The Sadducee’s, who don’ believe in the resurrection, ask a very twisted question about the resurrection. Jesus handles it by pointing out that even Moses and David, highly regarded by these men, believed in the resurrection - MIC DROP!

Confrontation #3 - Jesus addresses the scribes hypocrisy and desire for prominence but their failure to live out love for others.

Read it and be challenged and go and make a difference in someone’s life today. A call, note, or text can go a long ways.

Monday Reflection

How are you doing? How are you drawing into the heart of Jesus in this COVID-19 season? This morning I took time to read in the Old and New Testament readings from my normal reading time and then went to prayer. I prayed for family, friends and those I have heard are in health turmoil. I then took time to connect with our medical professionals either through phone or text messages. Please lift them up in prayer, each of them mentioned the stress and fear that exists right now. They are brave believers following the sacrificial example of Christ. Let’s together pray for their strength and that they would be light in a very dark world. Each of them carries forth a living Hope - Jesus Christ; they can bring light and life in ways we cannot right now. So tonight before you pillow your head in a safe and clean home - would you join me in praying for our medical family. Your time in doing so or in gathering together your family to pray tonight will not be wasted. Thanks so much.

Luke 20:1-19  was our passage today and I will have a post up tomorrow about tomorrow’s passage.

Easter Offering 2020

EasterOffering2020.1.jpg

Jeremiah and April Markley

markley s.jpg

Jeremiah and April Markley have been a part of our church from their days at New Tribes Bible Institute [now Ethnos360].  They minister with Ethnos360 to the Dinangat people of Papua New Guinea.  After learning the language and working with their teammates to teach the Bible chronologically, they saw many of the Dinangat trust Jesus as their Savior.  They currently are actively translating the Bible into the Dinangat language, overseeing the language acquisition of new missionaries, and overseeing the local Sakam church and their ongoing growth and mission.

They are returning to Michigan for a year of home ministry this month.  Significant expenses are being incurred for the flight home as well as getting resettled for their time back here in Michigan.  Please pray for this transition and that our Easter offering will help them in special ways.

Joe and Ladaere
Milioni

milionis.jpg

Joe Milioni grew up at FBC.  He and Ladaere have ministered with United World Mission for many years.  From Uruguay, to Costa Rica, to all over South America, to Cuba, to Jordan, and now back to North Carolina – they have helped train church planters and aid them in strategically reaching their people.  They are currently serving at UMW’s headquarters where they are ministering to missionaries as they head to various countries and transition from culture to culture.

Recently, Joe has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  Life has drastically changed with regular dialysis, chemotherapy, side-effects, medications, and surgeries.   While his spirit has been good, it is a very difficult time.  Please pray for God’s grace and healing.  We trust that the Easter offering will be a blessing to them.

It is the heart of our church to unify together to help these families in a special way. In light of this, any gifts given toward their needs will be divided equally and gifted to them at the end of the month. Please prayerfully consider how you can be a blessing to these faithful servants.

Thursday's Moment: A short word about a short man

Today’s reading is in Luke 19:1-27

As the sun comes up this Thursday morning, we can be thankful for many things. Let me encourage you to have a conversation today with someone about all the things you can be most thankful for.

Luke shares with us the familiar story of the little guy named Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus lived the life of a short man: always on his tippy toes, always looked over, and always the last one picked for the playground games. As he grew up, maybe that’s what led him to feel he had to take a little extra off the top as he collected people’s taxes.

Tax collectors were despised, hated; but one day someone came to town and created quite the stir. Most amazing was that the popular sought after Jesus actually looked over everyone else and paid singular attention to the needy heart of Zacchaeus.

Jesus, drove through the crowd to get to this little guy. Jesus invited himself into his life. Jesus entered his home as a friend. Jesus walked out as his Lord and King. Take time to read this familiar story and then spend some time saying “thank you” for all Jesus has done for you.

KIDS - don’t forget to post your picture of a large animal next to something very tiny. I’ll be sending out a prize to the winning pictures.

Wednesday 4/1 Moment in the Word with Pastor Tom

Luke 18:18-43

Again we are told 3 quick stories and each of them has a big truth jumping off the page at us. Take time to listen to watch my video about it and then go back and read the passage for yourself. Then with each story: The rich ruler; Jesus predicting His death; and the healing of the blind man - jot down what the truth is you learn about Jesus.

Kids - I’m looking for some silly pictures of a big animal trying to fit into a small space or next to something supersmall. This was part of the truth Jesus was teaching - a camel cannot fit inside the eye of a needle and we cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven based on good things we do. I will look forward to seeing your BIG drawings and me and Miss Amber can’t wait to talk to you guys at 7pm tonight on Facebook Live.

LINK for NOON DAY PRAYER BELOW.

NOON DAY PRAYER

There is nothing better we could do with our time than to gather in prayer for our world right now. At Noon this Wednesday we are going to gather around our laptops and have a time of prayer. We ask you to join us. Here are a few ways you can do that. If you have a google account you could just follow this link Noon-Day Prayer with your laptop and then click on “join Hangout”

You could go to your APP store and download the “Google Hangout” APP on your phone and join us. We will gather at 12 Noon. I hope you can join us.

Here are the prayer requests for today:

Kingdom Requests: pray that...
1. We would draw near to God during this crisis  through reading the Word & prayer.
2. Our hearts would find peace in who God is (our Refuge, Strength, Fortress, present help, Sovereign, all-powerful - Psalm 46).
3. God would burden/break our hearts for the lost.
4. Covid 19 would have a sobering effect on Christians, and that we would wake up and live radically for Christ! That we would love God with the entirety of our being, love our neighbor, and share the eternal life-giving message of the gospel with others.
5. God would use the Coronavirus to drive people to Christ by... humbling people, exposing the uncertainty & frailty of life, showing people their mortality, having people contemplate death and their eternal destiny, showing people that their heart is infected with the ultimate virus of sin and the only antidote is Christ.

Physical Needs: pray that...
1. We would seek to help those in our body who are in need (financial, groceries etc)
2.  God would keep us united and connected as a body even though we’re physically apart.
3. God would minister to those who are sick.
4. We would seek opportunities to minister to our community during this crisis.

Tuesday's Moment in the Word with Pastor Tom

Luke 18:1-15

Will God find faith in you today?

The Covid-19 virus has caused havoc in our world today. It has destroyed many people’s idols. If you trusted in money, your job, or your health as your source of security - you realize how quickly that all could be taken away.

Today’s passage has 2 quick stories. Read them as notice that hey both are ways Jesus is challenging us about faith. He ends the first by asking, “Will the Son of Man find faith on the earth when He comes?” And in verse 9 he continues by telling a story to those who had faith in themselves and their own righteousness. Both are powerful warnings to us today to have faith in God.

Take time to look at your life today: would God say you are having faith in Him? What do you need to begin trusting Him for? What have you stopped seeking Him for that you should begin taking back before His throne and trusting Him with? Don’t give up… go back and seek Your Father, Our King, the Good Judge for those requests you seek …. those answers that only He can bring about. He is more than able… and He is GOOD!

Monday Reflection

Luke 17:20-37 - Some great thoughts on the coming of the Kingdom and Jesus’ famous statement regarding life - “Whoever seeks to preserve his life shall lose it.” Jesus is teaching that a Kingdom perspective is bigger than building our lives for the her and now, we must build our lives on eternal realities. There are some really powerful thoughts in this passage.

Yesterday we had some great discussion about the sermon on Sunday. Several have asked how to get to it again. You could watch and listen in below by clicking the Facebook box:

Keeping you connected 3/29/2020

Friday's Moment in the Word with Pastor Tom

A few words of encouragement this Friday: STOP…. PAUSE…. BREATHE…PRAY…..

The world is both in PAUSE and spinning a million miles an hour. Is God in control? Of course. Does He care about you, his child. Absolutely. Does He want to hear from you? Without a doubt.

Take sometime and read the passage from today… Luke 11:14-12:12. What you will find is that in the midst of doing life, people had some very dangerous ideas about God and who Jesus is. CAUTION: Let’s not make the same mistake. In the video below, I discuss the “Woe’s” that Jesus wanted the Pharisee’s about. Take some time to consider if you reflect any of the hypocrisy that Jesus was cautioning against.

Also kids —- there were some fun pictures yesterday. Honorable mention goes to Ava with her leashed snake - you are one silly girl and Emma with her Gerber Daisy. But the winner with the best fresh picked flower, as well as, the best thought from the passage goes to Colt - good job buddy. Your prize will be coming in the mail soon.

Hey, lets be ready for Sunday and make sure we read through today’s passage. See you Sunday - well kinda: our sermon will be available Sunday at 10 a.m. and we will be Facebook Liveing at 3pm Sunday afternoon. Join in on the discussion!

Wednesday's Moment in the Word with Pastor Tom

Scroll Down to see the link to join us in prayer:

Today’s reading is the amazing story of Lazarus and the rich man. A few thoughts: The Rich man wishes he could go back and redo things and he wants to warn his brothers of what’s coming.

The other important piece we see here is the value of communication. If only the rich man had known about eternity earlier. Who could have told him? Who didn’t he listen to? If only he could talk to his brothers now? If only he could talk to God now?

We can be glad we have the privilege of talking to God now. He hears us. He wants us to talk to him. Praise Him. Seek him for help. Will you make use of talking to God today?

There is nothing better we could do with our time than to gather in prayer for our world right now. At Noon this Wednesday we are going to gather around our laptops and have a time of prayer.
